How do you translate a Ukrainian diploma and supplement for WES or USCIS?

Checked , based on wes.org (opens in a new tab)

WES asks for an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator, and USCIS asks for a full translation with the translator’s signed certification. We translate Ukrainian diplomas (dyplom) and diploma supplements (dodatok) line by line: every course with its credits and grade, the seals and the signatures. We charge by the page: $25 for the first page and $20 for each additional one. The Ukrainian diploma translation is ready within 24 hours after payment.

Diploma and supplement

A Ukrainian degree has two parts. The diploma (dyplom) names the graduate, the university, the year of graduation and the qualification: the degree, the specialty and specialization, and in some cases the educational program. It is signed by the head of the university, and the signature is certified by its seal. Its series and registration number are assigned when the diploma is registered in the Unified State Electronic Database on Education, EDEBO (Resolution No. 193 of 2015 (opens in a new tab)). The supplement (dodatok) lists every course with its hours, ECTS credits, grade and points, the internship periods, the thesis with its topic and grade, the final assessment and the grading scale (Resolution No. 193 of 2015 (opens in a new tab)). Our sample, a specialist diploma from 2000, also gives the date of the State Examination Commission’s decision.

We translate both word for word, as WES requires (wes.org (opens in a new tab)). Grades go into the translation exactly as printed. Converting them to a GPA and judging what the degree equals in the US is the evaluator’s work.

Diplomas in two languages

From 2015, Ukrainian rules had bachelor’s and master’s diplomas and the European-format diploma supplement printed in Ukrainian and English, with a line that the Ukrainian text prevails in case of any difference. That resolution was replaced in 2020 by Resolution No. 811 (Resolution No. 193 of 2015 (opens in a new tab)). Our specialist diploma sample from 2000 is in Ukrainian only. On a bound diploma, the binding ribbon can hide part of a page, as on our master’s sample: we translate what’s visible and mark what’s hidden.

What WES asks for Ukraine

WES lists the Ukrainian credentials it evaluates most often: the junior specialist diploma (dyplom molodshoho spetsialista), the bachelor’s (bakalavra), the specialist (spetsialista), the master’s (mahistra) and the candidate of sciences (kandydat nauk). Its guide for Ukrainian students asks for the degree certificate and transcript verified by the Information and Image Center ENIC under the Ministry of Education and Science, sent to WES by ENIC directly (wes.org (opens in a new tab)).

Where the translation goes

  • WES: a word-for-word translation by a professional translator; it doesn’t accept handwritten translations, translations of photocopies or translations made by the applicant. What WES and ECE accept
  • ECE: a word-for-word translation in the same format as the original, unless you buy ECE’s Translation Waiver (ece.org (opens in a new tab)).
  • USCIS: a full translation and the translator’s signed certification. What USCIS accepts
  • DV lottery: Ukrainian applicants with a diploma issued by Russian authorities in occupied areas are told to get a copy issued by the Ukrainian government through the Ministry of Education and Science (U.S. Department of State (opens in a new tab)). DV lottery documents

Our Ukrainian documents are translated and certified by a native Ukrainian speaker. Which documents your evaluation needs is up to the evaluator. What to file in your case is for you or your attorney to decide.

Questions

My diploma already has English on it. Do I still need a translation?

That is for the evaluator or the agency to say: WES shows in your account which documents need a translation, and it doesn’t accept an English version of a document in place of a translation. If one is needed, we translate the Ukrainian text, seals and stamps in full.

How much does it cost?

We charge by the page: $25 for the first page and $20 for each additional one. A diploma is usually one page, and a supplement with all its courses takes several. Send photos, and we’ll tell you the exact price.

Do I need a notary or an apostille?

Not for the translation: WES asks for a word-for-word translation by a professional translator, and USCIS for the translator’s signed certification, which is included. If your diploma has an apostille, we translate it too.

How long does it take?

1–4 documents: within 24 hours after payment; faster, within 12 hours (+$15 a page) or 3 hours (+$30 a page, paid between 8 am and 6 pm Pacific time). For 5 or more, we give you the date with the quote.
