How do you translate a Romanian death certificate for USCIS or NVC?

Checked , based on travel.state.gov (opens in a new tab)

A death certificate in Romanian needs a full English translation with the translator’s signed certification before it goes to USCIS or NVC. We translate the certificat de deces from Romania and Moldova in full: the certificate, a duplicate, a multilingual extract or Moldova’s new paper extract, with every stamp and signature. A death certificate is usually one page: $25, ready within 24 hours after payment.

Issued in Romania

The Romanian death certificate (certificat de deces) comes from the civil status office (Oficiul Stării Civile) of the mayor’s office. The Department of State describes a gray A4 form with an ink stamp and the signature of the civil status officer, and notes that a duplicate may be subject to a fee (U.S. Department of State (opens in a new tab)).

To register a death, the person declaring it brings the medical report ascertaining the death, the identity cards of the deceased and of the declarant, the deceased’s birth certificate and, if the deceased was married, the marriage certificate (U.S. Department of State (opens in a new tab)).

A town hall can also issue a multilingual extract of the death record (extras multilingv) (Hațeg town hall (opens in a new tab)). For USCIS, a document with foreign-language text still needs a full English translation (8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) (opens in a new tab)).

Issued in Moldova

In Moldova the Public Services Agency issues the certificat de deces: a light form with a green-brown border, 8.27 by 5.83 inches, with an ink stamp and the registrar’s signature. Certified copies are available from the same agency (U.S. Department of State (opens in a new tab)). The United States doesn’t recognize documents issued by the de facto authorities in Transnistria.

A death registered on or after November 1, 2025, is recorded electronically. The paper version is an extract without security features, printed on request (Government of Moldova (opens in a new tab)).

When an immigration case needs it

In a family case, it can show that an earlier marriage ended with a spouse’s death. For an immigrant visa, NVC asks for evidence that every prior marriage ended, and a death certificate is one of the three documents it names, with a final divorce decree and annulment papers; the petitioning spouse’s earlier marriages count too (NVC civil documents (opens in a new tab)). For Form I-130, USCIS asks for documents showing that each earlier marriage legally ended (Form I-130 instructions (opens in a new tab)).

What the translation includes

Every field, the record number, the stamp and signature, and any note on the back. Names keep their Romanian letters, such as ș, ț, â and î, unless another document of your case spells them differently. Tell us which spelling to follow, and the death certificate will match the rest of your order.

Where the translation goes

  • USCIS: the translation and certification filed with a copy of the certificate. What USCIS accepts
  • NVC and US consulates: the Department of State doesn’t ask for a translation of a certificate in Romanian if you are applying for your visa in a country where Romanian is an official language. What NVC accepts
  • Immigration court: a typed certification with the translator’s address and phone. What the court accepts

Our Romanian documents are translated and certified by a native Romanian speaker. What to file in your case is for you or your attorney to decide.

Questions

Do you also translate the medical report on the death?

Yes, if your case needs it. It’s a separate document, priced by the page like the certificate.

How much does it cost?

A death certificate is usually one page: $25. Each additional page in the same order is $20, so a death certificate and two other one-page documents are $65.

Do I need a notary or an apostille?

Not for USCIS or NVC: they ask for the translator’s signed certification, and it’s included. If the certificate has an apostille, we translate that too.

How long does it take?

1–4 documents: within 24 hours after payment; faster, within 12 hours (+$15 a page) or 3 hours (+$30 a page, paid between 8 am and 6 pm Pacific time). For 5 or more, we give you the date with the quote.
