How do you translate a Peruvian birth certificate (partida de nacimiento) for USCIS?

Checked , based on travel.state.gov (opens in a new tab)

USCIS asks for a full English translation of a Peruvian birth certificate with the translator’s signed certification. We translate the partida (acta) de nacimiento in full, whether it is a RENIEC copy printed from the web, a copy from the municipality or a handwritten or microfilmed record, with the RENIEC stamp and everything on the back. A Peruvian birth certificate is usually one page: $25, ready within 24 hours after payment.

Who issues a Peruvian birth certificate

The partida or acta de nacimiento comes from the civil registry of the district or provincial council where the birth was registered, or from RENIEC, Peru’s national identity and civil status registry, once that council’s records have been incorporated into it (U.S. Department of State (opens in a new tab)).

If the record is digitized in RENIEC’s system, a certified copy can be ordered online or at any RENIEC office. If it isn’t, the copy comes from the municipality where the birth was registered. A birth registered at a Peruvian consulate abroad is requested from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (gob.pe (opens in a new tab)). A RENIEC copy shows a serial number and an issue date, and anyone can check it online with them (gob.pe (opens in a new tab)). The translation keeps both.

The RENIEC stamp for an immigrant visa

For an immigrant visa, the US Embassy in Lima asks that a birth record proving the relationship between the petitioner and the beneficiary be certified by RENIEC, with a seal or a stamp on the document. For NVC, you scan the front and the back, even when the back is blank (U.S. Department of State (opens in a new tab)). We translate both sides, so the RENIEC certification is in English too.

Handwritten, typed and microfilmed records

Peruvian birth records come in many forms: an entry copied out by hand, a record typed on a template, or a photocopy of the microfilmed original. A birth recorded after the deadline goes through a judicial or administrative late registration (U.S. Department of State (opens in a new tab)). Whatever your copy looks like, we translate every entry, stamp and note in the margin. A word that can’t be read is marked [illegible], never guessed.

The certificado de nacido vivo, issued by a health professional, is what is presented to register the birth (gob.pe (opens in a new tab)). The partida is the registry’s record, and it is the one we translate as the birth certificate.

Names and surnames

If the partida gives two surnames, we keep both in the order of the partida and spell every name as in your passport. Tell us the spelling when you order, and every document in your order will use it.

Where the translation goes

Our Spanish documents are translated and certified by a native Spanish speaker. What to file in your case is for you or your attorney to decide.

Questions

My partida was issued by the municipality, not by RENIEC. Will you translate it?

Yes, whoever issued it. If you later have the copy certified by RENIEC, the stamp becomes part of the document, so send us the copy you will actually file and the translation will show the stamp.

How much does it cost?

A Peruvian birth certificate is usually one page: $25. Each additional page in the same order is $20, so three partidas are $65.

Do I need a notary or an apostille?

USCIS doesn’t ask for either: it asks for the translator’s signed certification, which comes with every translation. An apostille already on your partida is translated with it.

How long does it take?
